Download Skype latest version and enjoy the chat and calls from your PC to mobile phone. You  can also share your files using skype. Skype is a voice over IP and application software.

Skype was first released in 2003, written by Estonian developers Ahti Heinla, Priit Kasesalu and Jaan Tallinn, who had also originally developed Kazaa. It became a platform with over 600 million users and was acquired by Microsoft in 2011 for $ 8.5 billion.

The service allows users to communicate with peers by voice using a microphone, video using a webcam and instant messaging over the Internet. Phone calls can be put on recipients of traditional telephone networks. Calls to other users of the Skype service are free, while calls to landlines and mobile phones are loaded through a user account system based debit. Skype has become popular for its additional features including file transfer and video conferencing. Competitors include SIP and H.323 services based, as Linphone and Google Voice.

Skype has 663 million registered users as of EOY 2010. The network is operated by Microsoft, which has its Skype division headquarters in Luxembourg. Most of the development team and 44% of employees in general of the division is located in Tallinn and Tartu, Estonia.
Unlike other VoIP services, Skype is a peer to-peer and client-server hybrid. It makes use of background processing on computers running Skype software. Original project name Skype (Sky Peer-to-Peer) reflects this fact.

Some network administrators have banned Skype on corporate, government, home, and education networks, citing reasons such as inappropriate usage of resources, excessive use of bandwidth, and security.

Registered users of Skype are identified by a unique Skype Name, and may appear in the Skype directory. Skype allows registered users to communicate through both instant messaging and voice chat. Voice chat allows telephone calls between pairs of users and conference calling, and uses a proprietary audio codec. Text chat client Skype allows group chats, emoticons, storing chat history and editing of previous messages. Offline messages were implemented in a beta version 5, but after a few weeks removed without notice. The usual features familiar to instant messaging users – user profiles, online status indicators, and so on – are also included.
