An individual day pass to access Skype Premium and group video calling cost $4.99 alone. Skype group video calling allows users to participate in video chats with up to 10 people using PCs or Macs.

Skype was acquired by United States-based Microsoft Corporation on 13 October 2011, and the Skype business and companies Skype Technologies S.A., Skype Software S.A., Skype Communications S.A., Skype Inc. and Skype Limited are now controlled by Microsoft as a part of its Applications and Services Group. The VoIP software and service Skype continues to be licensed by and operated by Skype Communications S.A. which has its headquarters in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg.Skype /ˈskaɪp/ is a freemium voice over IP service and instant messaging client, currently developed by Microsoft-owned Skype Technologies. The name was derived from “sky” and “peer”.

Skype was first released in August 2003. It was created by Janus Friis (Denmark) and Niklas Zennström (Sweden) in cooperation with Ahti Heinla (Estonia), Priit Kasesalu (Estonia), and Jaan Tallinn (Estonia), who supplied the backend which was also used in Kazaa. Skype had 663 million registered users at the end of 2010.It was bought by Microsoft in 2011 for $8.5 billion. Microsoft’s Skype division headquarters is in Luxembourg, but most of the development team and 44% of the overall employees of the division are still situated in Tallinn and Tartu, Estonia.

Like many other instant messaging services, Skype clients can send SMS text messages to mobile phone numbers. In the United States, China, and Taiwan, Skype uses a “generic, pre-defined number” as the sender ID. In other countries, the message can be set to appear coming from a verified mobile number, allowing recipients to reply, or else show the first 11 characters of the Skype username. However, as of March 2011, Skype users cannot receive SMS, despite a continuing series of requests and complaints.

Costs are generally lower than standard SMS charges; for example Skype’s UK rate per SMS message including VAT is 6.4p, compared to standard rates of 10p or 12p[citation needed]; for international SMS costs will be significantly cheaper using Skype.
